Urgent Care Clinics vs. Emergency Rooms

Urgent care clinics are walk-in clinics where the focus is to help patients with minor injuries or problems and provide them with immediate  services. Urgent care clinics are dedicated medical facilitation points and are capable of providing preliminary health care but cannot handle serious emergencies, that’s what make them different from emergency departments and some convenient care clinics.

Urgent care clinics are an excellent alternative to emergency rooms in many situations. They can save you both money and time. At many urgent care clinics, you do not have to have an appointment. These are often called walk-in clinics. If the issues are not life threatening you should consider one of these clinics.

What are Emergency Rooms?

An emergency department is established to handle seriously injured or critical patients. Normally, in hospitals, an appointment is required but this department serves the patients without prior appointment. These ER departments are generally found in hospitals and some other primary care centers. The emergency department is capable of handling any kind of medical situation which can be a minor injury or a life-threatening situation, that needs critical care and attention. Emergency departments are in operation continuously without closing.

The Scope of Services in Urgent Care Clinics vs. Emergency Rooms:

The scope of Emergency Rooms and Urgent Care (UC) Clinics can be determined by looking at the kind of services they provide and in what ways they differ and are similar.

The Differences:

The core difference between Urgent Care (UC) clinics and Emergency rooms (ER) is that the urgent care units are designed just to provide treatments to minor injuries and ailments. While Emergency Rooms (ER)are formed as a department in a hospital to cope with seriously injured and critical patients whose life is in danger.

Urgent Care clinics provide the treatment for ailments like Flu, immunizations, headache, fever, cough, chills, sneezing, after-hour care, sprains and other similar cases. Contrary to this, ER's can handle more complex cases like accidental injuries, heart attack, severe bleeding, damaged organs or fractures or loss of consciousness, as examples. ER's are equipped with facilities to treat a wide range of cases,as no case is pre-appointed or being informed to the medical staff. So, in order to cope with the problems, several specialists and general physicians are on-duty in ER of hospitals.

The average expenses per patient,of UC clinics are much lower as compared to ER. UC clinics provide a faster service and respond to patients in less time when compared to Emergency Rooms.

The Similarities:

Both the Emergency Rooms (ER) and Urgent Care (UC) clinics are staffed by medical staff and health service providers. The first aid in both cases is provided by paramedical staff and nurses. Expense of treatment in both cases can be covered by your insurance.Exceptions may occur due to unnecessary visits and out of network facilities. Both the places are equipped with diagnostic facilities including X-ray machines, MRI and CT scanners etc. and can also provide the patients with IVs,medications and even treatment plans.
